After hanging up the phone, it hit me. "Oh no, we're going to stick out like a sore thumb sneaking into a hotel in evening gowns at this tof night. If anyone connects us to the crscene, we're screwed!" Madison got the gravity of the situation, too. Her face went pale. "What now? We can't actually avoid calling the police, can we?" Suddenly, an idea popped into my head. "Alright, here's the plan. First, we ditch these outfits so we don't stand out. Then, we find a spot to lay low and wait for the police, so no one sees us." Madison nodded.

We rushed to the hotel restroom, changed out of our gowns, and stuffed them into our bags. Then, we grabbed a couple of casual outfits from the hotel gift shop. Only then did we sigh in relief.

"What now?" Madison asked. "We can't just waltz back to the lobby and wait." I glanced around and spotted a stairwell tucked away in the corner. "Let's hide in there. No one usually goes to places like that." We rushed into the stairwell, slipped inside, and pressed ourselves against the wall, still shaken.

"I never thought the night would go like this," Madison muttered. "If I'd known, I wouldn't have gone to that stupid charity gala." "Who could've seen this coming?" I forced a bitter smile. "But this might be tied to Ethan and the others. We need to stay on our toes." Madison nodded. "Yeah. By the way, how'd you handle that masked person back there? Do you know skind of fighting skills or something?" "I've picked up a thing or two," I said with a small laugh, avoiding the details.

"Oh, that makes sense! Guess that's why I couldn't beat you in prison. You fight dirty!" she teased.

I grinned. "And you didn't? You called in a whole bunch of jerks who almost beatto death!" We were still bantering when, all of a sudden, the stairwell door burst open. Madison and I jumped in shock.

The person who walked in was all dressed in black, his face hidden behind a mask and hat. We couldn't make out any features, but the way he carried himself screamed it was the sguy I knocked down earlier.

He slowly made his way down the stairs, his eyes scanning the area until they landed on us.

"What are you two doing lurking around here? Are you actually reporters?" he asked in a cold, low voice.

Madison and I were petrified and hastily denied it. "No, no, we're just hiding out and don't want anyone to see us. Please don't get the wrong idea." The guy wasn't buying it. He walked right up to us. We shrank back, only to find ourselves trapped against the wall, with nowhere to go.

Just when we thought we were done for, the gay suddenly stopped, let out a muffled groan, and slumped onto the steps. His shoulders trembled as though he was sobbing.

Why the heck was this guy suddenly crying? He reached out a hand and started walking toward me. I tensed up, ready to take him down.

"Evelyn Wiley," he choked out. "I knew it was you!"

I was stunned, barely believing it. I could tell who it was from just that voice. "Ethan? How did you know it was me?"

Had he been following us this whole time? Did he see through my om disguise? Was it not good enough? A NO wave of emotions hit me-shock, relief, dread-all at once. My body went stiff.

Ethan slowly looked up and pulled off his mask, his face streaked with tears and swollen. I must've kicked him pretty hard earlier.

"I'm sorry, Evelyn," he mumbled. "It's all my fault. Zach..." "Zach?" My chest tightened.
