Chapter 129 Becoming Enemies "He must have been a man you loved deeply," he began, "the father of your child.
That's why you're so invested. You had dreams of bearing his children, maintaining that connection, and perhaps even sharing a hone day, isn't that so?" "Yes!" "Say it once more!" "Yes, yes!" Penelope was prepared to gamble everything. After all, he would never accept the truth, so she might as well indulge his narrative and provoke him further! "The father of my child pledged to wed me, and I am waiting for him," Penelope declared, "He's a gentle soul, thoughtful, and he promiseda future! He surpasses you a thousandfold, no, a millionfold!" A vein pulsed ominously on Kelvin's forehead.
"You're deliberately trying to provoke me, aren't you, Penelope? Your words could be the death of me!" She scoffed, a derisive smile playing at the corners of her mouth, "You can't even handle a few words..." What about her? She had lost a life, a tiny, vibrant life.
Penelope's hands trembled violently as they slowly moved to her now flat belly.
It had been flat before, but back then, she knew that there was a life growing inside her.
Now...
Nothing. Everything was lost.

As of late, the only thing Penelope clung to was the memory of her parents. But they were aging... and eventually, they too would depart from her world. When that day arrived, she would be utterly alone, with no ties, and no one to anchor her.
Standing by her bedside, casting a looming shadow over her, Kelvin asked, "Penelope, aîer you certanir you warntitrupposerine??" often untregar creed, him, lern, larred, rhythméanly stroking her belly as if the child was still there.
"You have two choices," Kelvin broke the silence, "and I suggest you choose the easier path." "What choices?" "First, live with me, as a true husband and wife. Second, resist and despise me, but I assure you, your life will only becmore difficult." Such drastically different paths-any wise person would know which to choose without hesitation.
"True husband and wife"-those words symbolized wealth and status, all the privileges that cwith being Mrs. Davis. But Penelope couldn't do it. She couldn't suppress her loathing and pretend as if nothing had transpired- remain docilely by Kelvin's side, his trapped songbird, his possession. She wasn't the type of woman to live in someone else's shadow. Nor was it the life she yearned for! "And what if I choose the second option?" her eyes met his. "What if I reject your well- paved road, choosing instead the unstable, lonely plank bridge?" "Penelope, you're not seeing the bigger picture!" "It's you who's blind!" she shot back, her chin lifted defiantly. "I've made countless compromises, just to give birth to our child, just to let that child live even if I never got to see him... but you had to extinguish every last glimmer of hope!" "It's the only way for us to..." "Us? There's no 'us'!" Penelope interrupted him. "Kelvin, I am me, you are you there's no 'we'!" It was a vehement rejection. Kelvin had never been so outrightly rejected before. His hands at his sides clenched and unclenched in a rhythm of tension and release.
Struggling to sit upright in her sterile hospital bed, Penelope's blanket slid off, revealing her pale hospital gown. The stark white of the fabric only served to highlight her ghostly pallor.
"You never asked if I wanted this," she declared, her voice echoing in the sterile room. "Kelvin, you're so selfish. You always expect everyone to cater to your feelings..." "I'm telling you now, I refuse to follow your orders. We are enemies, forever bound by a lifelong vendetta!" The grief of losing a child, the anguish of witnessing her parents' torment, the guilt of her own perceived helplessness... These emotions were entwined around Penelope, driving her to the brink of a complete breakdown and a loss of control.
In a swift, uncontrolled gesture, she flung a pillow at Kelvin, scattering anything within her reach in a fit of rage. With a sweeping motion, she sent glasses and assorted items from the nightstand crashing to the floor.
The loud shattering sound and scattering fragments echoed across the tiled floor, alarming the bodyguard stationed outside. Thinking something was amiss, he burst into the room with a swift kick, "Mr. Davis!" Penelope's teeth were clenched, her eyes bloodshot, hands bracing against the mattress.
She had been on an IV drip, but her sudden movement had dislodged the needle from the back of her hand. In a fit of frustration, she yanked it out and sent the IV stand toppling to the floor.

The bodyguards were momentarily frozen: "Mr. Davis... Mrs. Davis..." Kelvin's face was a mask of stony rage as he silently watched her outburst. Penelope had her pride too.
"I truly despise you, I loathe you!" Penelope burst out. "Kelvin, you treatso cruelly, yet you expectto stay by your side as if nothing's happened... How could I? Do you think I'm like Fiona or sother woman?" He looked at her quietly, "Are you done?" "Not even close!" "Alright, then carry on." Penelope glared at him, seething, "Why are you so calm? Because you're heartless, you don't feel pain!" "Yes, I'm heartless," Kelvin affirmed, then barked sharply at the bodyguard, "Get out!" "Mr. Davis..." "Leave!" he commanded. "No matter what you hear, don't cin. And no one else is allowed in!" With no other choice, the bodyguard reluctantly withdrew.
Kelvin reached for Penelope's hand and noticed the beads of blood on the back of her hand.
She tried to pull away, but he gripped her tighter.
"Do you have a death wish?" he asked coldly. "Stopping the IV?" Penelope retorted, "You might as well tortureto death." "You're not going to die. You're going to live... right by my side."

He pressed the call button summoning a nurse, "Set up a new IV for her." "Certainly, Mr. Davis." Penelope, uncooperative, covered her hand, "No need, you can leave." "Do it, ignore her." The nurse was caught in a dilemma.
Kelvin wrapped his other hand around hers to prevent her from moving.
Penelope huffed, "So what if you reinsert the needle? I'll just pull it out eSeRVI е again later. "You want to die?" "Hmm, I lost the will to live a long tago."
Kelvin spoke indifferently, "If you die...
e your parents won't have much life left in them either." She looked up sharply, "What are you implying?" "I'm not planning anything. Penelope, if news of your death reached your parents, do you think they could continue living with ease?" He was right...
Her parents had only her. Without her, they would be devastated.
Penelope slowly began to calm down.
The nurse exited the room as silent as a whisper, leaving behind a profound stillness that enveloped them both.
