Chapter 128 The Husband Stepping outside, Monica's stomach growled with an audible demand for sustenance. The clock had already struck 2 p.m., the usual tfor lunch. Timothy, hearing the sound, couldn't help but chuckle. He playfully ruffled her hair, suggesting, "Let's get sfood in you first." Monica, bowing her head in agreement, pouted slightly. Unbeknownst to her, this simple gesture was surprisingly intimate.
The hospital continued to buzz with activity, people coming and going in a constant stream. As the day wore on, the light began to fade, and the sky was painted with the warm hues of the setting sun. However, within the confines of the VIP hospital room, a palpable tension was steadily thickening.
Kelvin, his face stiff with concern, demanded, "Why hasn't she woken up yet? Wasn't the anesthesia supposed to wear off by the afternoon?" It was now 6 p.m., and there wasn't a hint of Penelope regaining consciousness.

"Mr. Davis," the doctor finally spoke, "it could be that Mrs. Davis doesn't want to wake up. This prolonged unconsciousness might mean she's refusing to face something in the real world, so she's chosen to keep sleeping." Kelvin crossed his arms, deep in thought. "What can we do?" The doctor hesitated before suggesting, "Well... we could wait smore, or we could try to provoke a response by using something that holds great importance to her to signal that it's tfor her to wake up." Impatient, Kelvin nodded dismissively and gestured for everyone to leave the room. Once again, silence engulfed the space. The waning sun's glow streamed through the window, casting a golden light on the floor, offering a semblance of peaceful normality. Penelope lay there, her eyes closed, seemingly in deep slumber, not a single twitch of life. Just lying there, motionless. "Are you trying to punishin your own way?" Kelvin questioned, speaking to her as though she could hear, "Is that it?" "I said I'd love you in my way, is this how you're responding?" He moved to the bedside and gently brushed away the hair from her forehead. "You can run from reality temporarily, but not forever," Kelvin whispered ominously, leaning in close to her ear. "Penelope, if you don't wake up, I'll start with those close to you... one by one." Her eyes fluttered slightly. It was an effective tactic. She always had a thing for tough love. In an effort to rouse her quickly, Kelvin persisted, "Open your eyes, Penelope. Don't go back to sleep." "Sooner or later, you have to face reality." "I've said it before; this is just the beginning, not the end." "The future... it's going to get better, you know?" Kelvin repeated over and over, "You can't escape me. You can't hide from me." Penelope just found it all so annoying. His voice, deep and magnetic, kept speaking right into her ear, each word crystal clear. She didn't want to wake up. So cold, so dark, she felt as if she were sinking into an endless abyss. There was light ahead, but she shunned its direction. For Penelope, living was too exhausting. What had she done wrong to deserve this...
"Penelope, wake up. I'm ordering you to wake up now." "Do you think by continuing to sleep, you can solve anything?" "Your father in jail, your mother in the hospital-don't you care about them?" Father, mother...
It had been so long since she had felt the warmth of family. Penelope's mouth opened slightly, her throat parched. Kelvin watched as the woman before him parted her pale, chapped lips. He turned to grab a cup of water, dipped a Q-tip in it, and gently moistened the corners of her lips.
But Kelvin felt this method... too slow. He took a sip and leaned down to kiss her, transferring water into her mouth. The temperature of the water was just right, sweet... Penelope's eyes slowly opened to find his face inches from hers.
Kelvin.
His eyelashes were long, and with his eyes closed, he looked deeply affectionate. The sensation on her lips reminded Penelope of what was happening. Whether he was giving her water or kissing her, Penelope didn't care, her heart felt ice cold. She opened her mouth and bit down hard! "Ah!" Kelvin frowned. He slowly pulled away, meeting her cold, unfamiliar gaze. Strangely unfamiliar, as if he'd never seen her like this before.
"You're awake," Kelvin said, straightening up and nonchalantly wiping his lips with his fingertip. Penelope didn't speak, her gaze filled with resentment. She was still weak, and more than that, heartbroken. The baby... was gone.

His words were like a death sentence for the child now lost. Penelope closed her eyes, feeling a stinging dryness. She could cry no more, having reached the point where sorrow becomes tearless.
"Kelvin... you're so cruel," she forced out the words, "You killed my baby with your own hands!" The tiny life she'd protected so fiercely and devotedly was gone. Just gone. Not lost to an accident, not taken by Fiona, not claimed by illness, but by Kelvin's own hand.

Kelvin stood by the bed, looking down at her. "That kid was a mistake, Penelope. I just ended that mistake for you." "Who gave you the right to end it? And who are you to decide the fate of my child?" "Because I'm your husband."
Penelope gave him a cold, distant stare. It was almost as if... that's how he had always looked at her before. Now, the tables had turned. Kelvin couldn't bear her gaze and looked away, refusing to meet her eyes.
"Husband?" Penelope laughed, a laugh tinged with desolation and helplessness, "Have you ever fulfilled the duties and responsibilities of a husband? Have you ever treatedas your wife, with respect, understanding, and love?" "I will in the future."
"There is no future!" Penelope's voice rose sharply, interrupting him 'Kelvin, here's no us in the future. Not anymore!" Her child was her life. He took her life from her and dared to talk of the future? Laughable! She would never forgive him in this lifetime! Kelvin's expression darkened. "Then who do you want a future with?" "Anyone but you," Penelope bit her lower lip, glaring at him, "Kelvin, I hate you. I will hate you for the rest of my life!" His face twisted into a malicious scowl.
