Chapter 126 The Prospect of Another Child Kelvin held his silence, refusing to reveal the truth. He feared the old man might succumb to a stroke from sheer fury or, at the very least, lapse into a hypertensive coma for several days. "Gramps," he began, his words measured, "why do you place such importance on this child? I'll have children someday." The old man bristled at his comment. "Someday, someday... Will I even live to see that day? By the tyou have them, I'll be six feet under and dead to the world!" "Perhaps I could send you their photos?" Kelvin suggested.

"You!" The old man clutched at his chest, "You're trying to givea heart attack! Kelvin, can't you just fulfill this one small wish of mine properly?" Lily attempted to soothe the old man's distress. "What matters is that you take care of yourself. They're still in the operating room, no news yet. Don't frighten yourself." "But didn't you hear what Kelvin said!" "That wasn't the doctor speaking," Lily countered, "We should wait for the surgery to conclude." Then, feigning concern, she inquired, "What happened to Penelope? Wasn't she doing well? We've been sending her all sorts of supplements, so why is she in surgery?" "She's not meant to have this child," Kelvin answered dryly.

The old man, irate at his remark, retorted, "What do you mean 'not meant to'? This child was destined for the Davis family, how could you question that fate?" "Grandpa, I understand your desire to hold your great-grandchildren. Once Penelope's health improves, we'll try again. It's as simple as that." He paused before adding, "If all goes well, it could happen this year." The Davis family was affluent. They could afford the best doctors, nannies, and all sorts of postnatal care to ensure Penelope's optimal health. Kelvin was in his prime. So, getting pregnant would be a piece of cake. His child would undoubtedly be LA's finest heir or socialite.

"How can you be so indifferent, showing no signs of distress?" The old man sensed something was amiss. "That's your child, don't you feel anything?" Kelvin remained silent, his eyes fixed on the clock. The doctor had estimated the surgery would take about an hour - twas almost up. Meanwhile, Lily was internally perplexed, finding it impossible to decipher the situation.

Even if Kelvin detested Penelope, even if he considered her his enemy's daughter, the child was his flesh and blood. They say even beasts don't devour their young. So why was Kelvin showing no emotion? It appeared he was truly ruthless, indifferent even to his own offspring. No wonder he could rule the Davis family - it takes a heart of ice and a will of steel to stand atop the mountain of power. Lily mused, her own son needed to learn this decisive ferocity! The old man sighed heavily, sinking onto a bench, seeming to age a decade in that moment. Kelvin wanted to reveal that the child wasn't his, nor was it a member of the Davis family. But on second thought... he decided against it. Speaking up now would only diminish Penelope's place in the old man's heart. He still had plans for her, considering her unique situation. Lily almost laughed, but she had to suppress it so as not to draw attention, which left her with a rather awkward expression.

"Let it be, let it be. I guess this old man just isn't cut out for it," the old man conceded as he rose to his feet. "I better head back. Sitting here waiting for bad news... my heart can't take that." "Old man, maybe you should wait, just in case, you know?" Kelvin suggested.

"What 'just in case' is there left?" Lily grabbed his arm, "It'll be any minute now." She was not about to leave without hearing "we couldn't save Penelope's baby" directly from the doctor. Only then would her heart be at ease! At that moment, the lights in the operating room went out. The hallway dimmed. Yet, Kelvin's eyes shimmered faintly.

The door of the operating room clicked open, and the doctor emerged, removing his mask. "The surgery was..." Kelvin cut him off and went straight to the point, "The baby?" Of course, the old man couldn't hear, "The surgery was a success, but we lost the baby." The doctor, catching Kelvin's glance, quickly caught on. "I'm sorry, we did everything we could, but we couldn't save the baby," the doctor immediately corrected himself, "Mr. Davis, don't be too disheartened... You and Mrs. Davis are young and healthy. There's always the possibility of having another child in the future." Kelvin hummed in acknowledgment.

"Mrs. Davis is quite weak right now and still under anesthesia. She needs to be transferred to a room for proper rest and recovery," the doctor explained, "She should stay in the hospital for at least a week to fully recuperate." With that, the doctor left.

Kelvin stood rooted to the spot, motionless.

Somehow, having done this thing he had set out to do, he felt no joy. Instead, there was a heavy sense of loss, panic, helplessness... It was as though he had lost something of great importance.

On slevel, Kelvin felt that Penelope would hate him for the loss of the child, and it was this thought that brought on these emotions. His heartbeat quickened, and he pressed his hand to his chest. This panic would fade in time, he thought, just an inexplicable feeling.

In this moment, Kelvin had no idea that what he had lost was the most important thing in his life.

The operating room doors swung wide open. Nurses rolled out a gurney with Penelope lying on it, her hair disheveled, an IV needle in the back of her hand. Her face was deathly pale.

Kelvin touched her hand, feeling its icy chill.

The old man's sigh echoed down the hallway.

Kelvin followed the gurney into the hospital room and shut the door with a thud behind him. He was going to stay by Penelope's side.

His phone rang. Kelvin answered, "Hello?" "Mr. Davis," Ryan asked cautiously, checking his watch, "it's almost noon. When are you coming into the office?" "Not today," cthe reply.

With a worried frown, Ryan pushed through the doors and into the m conference room. "Assistant Ryan," Timothy began, "what's the word? When is Mr. Davis getting here?"

"Mr. Foster," Ryan answered, "I just spoke to Mr. Davis. he said he won't be coming in today." "What?" "Did something happen to Mr. Davis?" "Why is he taking leave all of a sudden?" You see, Kelvin was known for his impeccable work ethic at the company. He was never late, never missed a meeting or a client visit.

And now, out of the blue, he just drops all his work? Timothy cleared his throat with a few coughs, clearly surprised himself, "Well, in that case, I'll lead the meeting." No other choice-Kelvin dropped the ball and now he had to pick it up.

Wonder what happened. I'll have to ask him later.

Timothy was the Vice President, after all-competent and charismatic. He could take charge without issue.

The meeting proceeded without a hitch.
