2/2 Chapter Twe hundred and Theis Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty The moment he let go of the wheel, the gate began to drop fast. He didn't hesitate. I barely had tto react before he bolted toward it. He dived through just as the gate slammed shut behind him.

"Alexander!" I screamed, panic rising in my throat. He was out-he'd made it. But my heart was still pounding like he hadn't.

He had a smile on his face; he saw that as 'fun'.

"You do this after givingthe little talk on 'trust'?" "I got through, didn't I?" "If you'd hesitated for even a quarter of a second, that thing would've split you in two." "But it didn't now, did it?" "I hate you.

"And I love you." "I love you too," I said, still shaken, "but you almost gavea heart attack." "I'm sorry," he murmured. "I knew I'd make it." We'd been too caught up in each other to even look around. We hadn't given our new location a single glance. There was a reason this passage was restricted, but as I scanned the area, I couldn't figure out why. Tall grasses covered the land, stretching on in every direction.

"I don't see any flesh-eaters here-makesthink the whole thing was just a lie," I said.

"Be careful. Something tellsit's not." He was right. This place was quiet. Too quiet. Not a single rodent, no animals in sight, not even birds. Just stillness.

It felt like a graveyard.

Alexander didn't speak for the next hour, and I couldn't help but wonder what was on his mind. Sometimes, I wished I could look into his thoughts, even if it would be a violation of his privacy.

Finally, I broke the silence. "Thank you," I said aloud, and Alexander looked at me, momentarily stunned. "I don't like her in my head, and somehow, you just locked her out.

"At least I got that right." He mumbled more to himself than to me.

"Alexander, are you alright?" I asked.

"Yeah-" "Don't givethat. I know something's on your mind." "I didn't handle it well with the soldier. It got out of control, and then he ended up killing his fellow soldiers. Their deaths are on me. My intention wasn't for any of them to die." He paused, then turned to me. "But at least I used my ability to help you, so it wasn't all for nothing." I was about to say something when I saw the creature walking toward us. I drew my gun and fired, hitti square in the head.

it 1/2 Chapter Two Hundred and That Alexander moved toward the creature, studying it.

I remembered the Empress's words: 'They are like walking corpses, but with no eyes. While vampires feed on blood, they feed on flesh. They don't think, feel, or see. They smell-they detect life by scent, and they feed on anything with a heartbeat. Their sole purpose is to kill.' Her description hadn't done them justice. They were more horrifying than anything I'd ever encountered, and I've seen my share of horrors. Their existence itself seemed to defy nature.

Then, to my shock, the creature began to rise, even with the bullet still lodged in its head. shot again, the force of the bullet driving it back, but it didn't stop. I fired until the gun clicked empty, every part of the creature's body riddled with bullets. But it just kept coming "What the fuck?" I muttered.

Alexander seized the creature and, in one smooth motion, ripped its head from its body. The rest of the creature's body crumpled to the ground, still twitching, while the severed head made sickening noises, squirming on its own.

Alexander tossed the head far away, leaving the body to keep jerking around on the floor.

That's when we heard the sounds; they seemed to be coming from everywhere. The starved creatures ran towards us, so fast they could outrun a common human. The gunshots must have attracted them.

Now I understood why the gate was sealed, why there wasn't a single animal in sight-these hellish creatures had feasted on them all.

Alexander unleashed his flames. The fire blazed so intensely I had to shield my eyes. Yet, the creatures kept charging toward it, and I finally understood just how dangerous they were. These things had no minds of their own; their only drive was to feed, and they would do anything to reach their prey. They were willing to die for it.

When Alexander's flames finally died down, many of the creatures had been reduced to ash, but more kept emerging from every corner. We were surrounded.
